Alumna selected for 2021 (Men's) Boat Race Cambridge Squad
Senior School
We are delighted and more than a little proud to report that RHS alumna Phyllis Chan (RHS 2012-2017) is one of 4 coxes to make it into the Cambridge Squad for the 2021 (Men's) Boat Race – all the more impressive as Phyllis only got involved in rowing for the first time in 2017, and simply out of pure curiosity!
Phyllis Chan attended Royal High School Bath as a boarder and following her A-levels in Geography, History and English went on to study World History at Sidney Sussex College, Cambridge where she is in her 4th year completing her Masters. Following her MPhil, Phyllis intends to take a year out to work and do some intensive language studying in written Chinese and Japanese before applying for a PhD.
When asked how she balances rowing and academic life Phyllis says ‘In terms of commitment I think as long as you really enjoy something you can make it work.’ To get through those tough training sessions though Phyllis will always have a small chocolate bar in her pocket for when it gets really cold adding ‘Having a good laugh between sessions is also important. Things can get quite intense and grounding myself is key for my mental health.’ On race days Phyllis is not one for superstitions or race day habits but does check her bag and equipment multiple times before leaving having once been fined for forgotten kit!
With Covid restrictions in place, Phyllis says that motivating herself and her teammates is a challenge but overcomes this by focusing on little everyday improvements and changes that have a big impact on the boat and crew. We have every faith in Phyllis’ commitment and her determination; best of luck for the coming months of training and making it into the final crew!
The Oxford Cambridge Boat Race 2021 will take place on Sunday 4th April on The Great Ouse at Ely. View the full press release including Phyllis’ squad profile to find out more.
