Boat trip along Kennet and Avon canal

Nursery and Prep School, Prep

In Geography this term, our Year 5 pupils have been looking at how settlements were built around rivers, with a focus on Ancient Egypt and the River Nile.

As a day trip to Egypt is not possible, we arranged for our Year 5s to go on a boat trip down the Kennet & Avon Canal instead!

Mrs Knights, Mrs Robson and Mrs Millard who went on the trip said: "Our pupils enjoyed learning  about why the canal was built and its links to the River Avon and comparing this to how the Nile was used in Ancient Egypt. They also developed their field work skills."

Year 5 student, Ottilie, reports on the trip:

"On Tuesday 11th June Year 5 went on a boat trip to the Kennet and Avon Canal. We went on a boat called Barbara McLellan and while on the boat learnt a bit about the restoration of the canal and looked out for some wildlife that is spotted along the canal. We went through one lock and each got a turn to sit on the open air balcony and feed ducks. We spotted a heron that followed us down the canal for a bit and we saw a few ducks. It was really fun!"

Our pupils enjoyed learning  about why the canal was built and its links to the River Avon and comparing this to how the Nile was used in Ancient Egypt. They also developed their field work skills. ”
