Going green for Sustainability Week
Senior School
Last week our school turned green again for our student-led Sustainability Week.
We began proceedings with an assembly celebrating the work of our Green Team last year who coordinated our successful application for the Eco Schools Green Flag, the top award which we received with Merit. We also welcomed our newly elected members of the team by presenting them with a badge, which I am sure they are wearing with pride.
Throughout the week we made sure our waste footprint was even lower than usual and ran a House Competition to see who would waste the least food. Results are in and it was Austen who wasted the least!
On Wednesday we welcomed our guest speaker John White from Hazelnut Community Farm in Bristol. He brought his big personality with him to share his love of nature and his message of how this can be good for our mental health. He also encouraged us to do some guerrilla gardening – flowers will be popping up in all sorts of unlikely places in the spring.
On Thursday our Sustainability Prefects, Toby and Anastasiia hosted a green forum which included our Year 6 Eco Warriors. One of the key issues discussed was what to do with the money raised from our non-uniform day. The popular vote went to WECAN the Women’s Earth and Climate Action Network. A charity that is specifically concerned with the disproportionate impact of climate change on women.
On Friday we put our boots where our mouths were and, with the BANES Clean and Green team 29 students took part in a litter pick. We found a remarkable amount of things in our local area – from coke cans to prosecco bottles – that needed tidying away and recycling.
Plans for the year look positive – look out for some animal adoptions and Switch Off fortnight in the next few weeks. Thank you to all who support this brilliant week in any way.
