IB1 Swedish Hosting: An International Experience to Remember

Sixth Form, Senior School, International

This term, our Year 12 IB students had the pleasure of hosting fellow IB students from Sven Eriksonsgymnasiet in Sweden. This collaboration has been a cherished tradition for several years, with the Swedish students always enjoying our beautiful city and school — they even compared it to Hogwarts! During their stay, they attended lessons alongside our students and bonded over some friendly competition at the bowling alley.

While we aren’t planning a return visit this year, it made me wonder: What do our students gain from hosting another school? As I observed the interactions over the three days, a few key insights stood out.

First and foremost, one of the most significant advantages of the IB Diploma Programme is its emphasis on developing international mindedness. Our visitors brought this concept to life in a way that no textbook could. While our students are aware that thousands of others around the world follow the same curriculum, meeting peers face-to-face made them truly feel part of a global educational community.

Another core principle of the IB is nurturing effective communicators, and it was inspiring to witness this in action. Our students collaborated confidently in English — despite the wide range of first languages represented — and demonstrated curiosity by discussing differences in schooling, experiences, and perspectives. These meaningful exchanges are invaluable in preparing students for future careers, where communication and teamwork are essential skills.

Most importantly, our students genuinely enjoyed the experience! The positive energy, laughter, and new friendships formed made it clear that this visit was a memorable highlight of the year.

A huge thank you to Sven Eriksonsgymnasiet for joining us — we hope to see you again soon!
