Learning French through a fun tradition
Nursery and Prep School, Languages
Our Year 5 French class celebrated the Feast Day of Epiphany with a really fun tradition. Amelia brought a homemade Galette des Rois to the lesson which she wanted to share with all her classmates.
The Galette des Rois is a very French treat shared on the Epiphany, the Twelfth Day of Christmas, to celebrate the Three Kings arriving to meet baby Jesus for the first time. It is made from puff pastry and filled with frangipane - and hidden inside each Galette is a ceramic toy called "la fève". The person who finds the fève will be crowned as King or Queen.
In our class celebrations, Cece volunteered to sit under the table first - this is a way of designating who gets the next slice (in French families this will often be the youngest child at the gathering, and stops people arguing over who will get a slice next). At the end of the game, the winner with the fève in her slice got to wear a crown made by another student.
Fantastic collaboration, great fun and delicious Galette celebrating a French tradition l’Epiphanie.
