A film in a day
Senior School, Sport, History
“ A very big thank you to Ed Boase and One Day Film for making this a really fun and dynamic experience for our students. Our Year 10s really benefited from taking part in the day and enjoyed the opportunity to be creative, while learning various technical filmmaking skills. It gave them a real taste of all the different aspects of the filmmaking process from screenwriting, fight choreography to camerawork and editing.”
Our Year 10 Students became filmmakers for the day as they took part in One Day Film School. In the morning, they had a really fun and productive session learning the essentials of filmmaking which included:
- Film History: from the early days of film to the latest in special effects
- Fight Choreography: analysing classic fight scenes then filming their own roundhouse punch
- Camera: learning to film like a pro, and tips and tricks to avoid common mistakes
- Screenwriting: learning the 3 things every good script needs, how to create memorable characters (and make us care)
Then it was time for the 10 Shot Challenge; students worked in groups to create silent films (with music) of up to 2 minutes based on a classic narrative (eg. ’Someone is kidnapped, an attempted rescue’).
Once the films were completed and our budding filmmakers were happy with their final edits, we were ready to take our seats for the world premiere of our students’ films. The judges (Hadrian Briggs, Young Film Academy representatives) ad the difficult task of deciding who would take home the Royal High Bath Oscars!
“ Good sports films – especially basketball films – are extremely rare so this is a miracle. This well-shot, well-edited mini-masterpiece has it all: winning performances, impressive sports skills, a superb teacher cameo and a richly deserved comeuppance for the villains. Great music choices, too!”Ed Boase, Director, Young Film Academy
After much deliberation, we finally have our results.
Drum roll please…
The winners of the 2024 Royal High Bath Oscars are:
- Best Motion Picture: "Game On"
- Best Performance: Amelie, "Forbidden"
- Best Technical Achievement: "School Panic"
A huge congratulations to the makers of "Game On" which earned a really positive review from Ed Boase, Director, Young Film Academy, who said:
“Good sports films – especially basketball films – are extremely rare so this is a miracle. This well-shot, well-edited mini-masterpiece has it all: winning performances, impressive sports skills, a superb teacher cameo and a richly deserved comeuppance for the villains. Great music choices, too!”
‘Game on’ will now be entered for the 2024 10 Shot Film Awards (Years 10-12) which recognises filmmaking excellence in 125 leading UK schools.
The judging panel is headed by Robin Kinsey, Vice President Marketing, Walt Disney Studios EMEA & UK - Marvel, Lucasfilm & 20th Century Studios.
We are keeping our fingers firmly crossed for when nominations will be announced in November, and the winners in December.
