Year 2 Visit Boiling Wells Outdoor Nature Reserve
Nursery and Prep School, Outdoor Education
In September, Year 2 set off to Bristol to spend a day in the open air.
Boiling Wells is a large, peaceful site in a wooded valley in the St Werburgh’s area. It really is a unique location and the girls thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to explore the wild, green spaces and natural features.
Our visit was tailored to our theme at the time - ‘Fiery flames’ - and Isabel, the educational consultant, led three sessions all linked to fire. Firstly we heard some traditional tales about fire and then the girls were asked to use clay and natural materials from the site to create a fire sprite. We then enjoyed making our own pizza dough which was cooked in the open fire in the cob pizza oven. They were delicious!
In the afternoon, we learned how to create a fire and had a go at using fire steels and cotton wool to make a spark which would start off the fire. Afterwards, the girls cooked popcorn in a handmade sieve ‘popcorn machine’ and listened to campfire stories.
It really was a magical day and the girls got so much from it – a great team building activity for the start of the year!
