The Royal High School: Anastasia - A Dazzling Display of Unity and Talent
As an NSTA representative, I had the distinct pleasure of attending the Royal High School Bath production of Anastasia the Musical on Saturday, 7th December 2024.
Under the expert guidance of the Head of Drama, Mrs Leanne Vincent-Norgate, the creative vision of choreographer Mrs Becki Maycroft, and the musical direction of Mrs Nicola Pocock, this rendition of the classic musical was nothing short of extraordinary.
This production transported its audience on a magical journey from the streets of Russia to the glamour of 1920s Paris, seamlessly blending historical intrigue with heartfelt storytelling. Based on the 1997 animated film of the same name, Anastasia reimagines the legend of the Grand Duchess Anastasia Nikolaevna of Russia, who was rumoured to have escaped the execution of the Russian Imperial family. Many years later, a young woman named Anya, suffering from amnesia, embarks on a quest uncover her past while two opportunistic con men attempt to exploit her resemblance to Anastasia.
The atmosphere was set even before the performance began, with cast members already in character onstage. As the audience filtered into the theatre, girls in pink sat blouses and black trousers busied themselves polishing the floor and dusting the stair while a young Anastasia played nearby, dressed in white. This simple yet effective opening hinted at the poignant and vibrant tale about to unfold. The set, built on two levels, was both impressive and functional, offering ample space for dynamic choreography while prominently featuring the accomplished student orchestra.
The cast delivered performances that were both confident and endearing, with number of stand-out performances. The ensemble’s contribution was invaluable, bringing energy and cohesion to the production. Moments of playful physical comedy, such as the mimed game of croquet or the amusing “Censored” sign during Anya and Dimitry’s kiss, brought laughter and fun to the performance.
The technical team ensured a seamless integration of lighting and sound, while the orchestra, composed mostly of students, played with remarkable professionalism and vigour. Their presence onstage added an extra layer of engagement, reminding the audience of the incredible talent involved in this production.
Anastasia at The Royal High School was a resounding triumph. The production balanced emotional depth with moments of levity, supported by a strong ensemble and extraordinary lead performances. From the colourful costumes and the stirring music to the intricate choreography, it was a visual and auditory delight—a testament to the skill, dedication, and passion of the entire cast and crew.
