Prep Roman afternoon

Nursery and Prep School, Student Voice

On Friday 25 March, Year 6 dressed up in their Roman outfits, ready for our special afternoon celebrating the 1900th anniversary of the building of Hadrian’s Wall. This was run in collaboration with the Great North Museum Hancock and first we joined a zoom session with education officer Helen Klemm. She showed us archaeological evidence about what it was like to live in a fort on the wall (cold!). We had to guess what the “mystery objects” were used for – Year 6 had great ideas. Then the girls used evidence from tombstones to find out that people had travelled from all over the Roman empire to work and trade on the Wall. We even found that a British woman was married to a man from Syria.

Year 12 Classics students helped Year 6 with their research.

Ellie explains "We each split off into groups with the prep school and were focused on helping our group and supporting them. We answered any questions they may have had as well as keeping them on task and ensuring it was enjoyable. They had lots of fun doing their worksheets and asked many questions. The final task with the activity workbook was the most enjoyable and we had lots of fun thinking of the names for the soldiers. I thoroughly enjoyed working with the younger girls and had many exciting discussions with them and found their jokes very funny".

Amy adds, "Ι helped manage the second room that the event was based in and I had so many funny and interesting conversations with all the girls. Ιt was very interesting to see how they got so engrossed into whatever topic we were doing and were not at all afraid to ask questions when needed."

optime fecisti (Very well done!) to all Year 6 and gratias tibi ago (thank you!) to the Year 12 helpers and the Great North Museum Hancock.

Apparently people used to share their houses with their horses and were only separated by a wall! I liked learning about this and it was fun to dress up in traditional costumes.”
Maisie P, Year 6
I like reading history books so I knew a fair amount about Hadrian's Wall. It was really interesting to find out about how people lived in different kinds of settlements.”
