Academic scholars trip to Oxford
Senior School
This month our academic scholars enjoyed a trip to Oxford, where they visited the Ashmolean Museum. This is part of our academic enrichment and the desire to stretch and challenge our scholars.
Anastasia has written a summary of their day which can be viewed below.
"We set out at 8:15, excited for what the day would bring. On arrival at the Ashmolean, we were astonished at the number of fascinating artefacts on display as well as the grandeur of the building and quickly got to work on our booklets, searching for interesting facts and reading some articles to help consider more difficult ethics-related questions.
We explored the sections on Ancient Egypt, and India from AD 600 before going upstairs to look at some artwork. Here we completed our tasks and convened outside for lunch in the wonderful sunny weather.
After finishing our lunches, we were met by our tour guide, Charles, who showed us around the beautiful, historical city of Oxford. He told us about some of the landmarks, including a wooden house from the medieval era, as well as the University and student life. We passed by a few of the 39 colleges, listening to stories about the famous people who had studied there such as J.R.R Tolkien and Philip Pullman, not to mention half of Britain’s prime ministers!
We also heard a bit about what life as a student in Oxford is like: libraries filled with millions of books; lavish living quarters; three-course meals; and the graduation ceremony held entirely in Latin.
It was a fantastic, extremely educational opportunity and we all thoroughly enjoyed the trip!"
