Ukraine Community Day at RHSB – Friday 24 February
A group of RHS Sixth Formers, Georgia, Anja and Kathy, have joined together with other Year 12 students across BANES to raise funds to send generators to Oleksandriya, Ukraine.
Oleksandriya is a city similar in size to Bath with 86,600 residents, and since the Russian hostilities it has become a place of refuge for over 11,700 displaced Ukrainian citizens migrating from war torn regions in the east of the country. 2,500 of these are children. This winter, the people of Oleksandriya are suffering power outages caused by Russian military action, enduring freezing temperatures and limited light. They urgently need our help to keep vital services working, to send emergency generators to power Oleksandriya’s children’s hospital, their schools, and their homes.
The students have organised a community day at RHSB on Friday the 24th of February (commemorating a year since Russia invaded Ukraine), encouraging the whole community to take part in an own clothes Community day featuring the colours of the Ukrainian Flag. Parents are invited to make a charity donation via ParentPay. The school catering team Holroyd Howe provided a special Ukrainian lunchtime meal.
The students have also worked to encourage parents, Carers, Students and Staff in the RHSB community to purchase a ticket for a Bath Abbey concert to help raise money for the cause.
“ If we can get 25 generators urgently to our friends in Oleksandriya this winter, we will be sending the gift of light and warmth from Bath and North-East Somerset. We believe that the students from our region are vital in achieving this.”Cllr Kevin Guy, BANES
Other children and families within the RHSB community have been fundraising for Ukraine, with Lottie from Prep running a bake sale all on her own over half term, raising an impressive £350 for British Ukraine Aid.
